The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is fully committed to multilingualism to effectively engage with the diverse global maritime community.

With this vision, IMO introduced a new Strategic Framework for Multilingualism in July 2024, which reflects IMO's commitment to using all six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, across all IMO's operations and activities.

This initiative aims to enhance communication, promote diversity and inclusivity, and ensure that IMO can better assist Member States, stakeholders, seafarers and all maritime community more effectively in a truly global maritime environment.

This effort aligns with the broader United Nations JIU Recommendation on Multilingualism.

What is the IMO Strategic Framework for Multilingualism?

This framework was developed in response to IMO Assembly resolution A.1180(33), adopted during the 33rd session of IMO Assembly. It emphasizes the importance of multilingualism in IMO’s work and commits to promoting linguistic diversity and inclusivity across the Organization.

The Strategic Framework for Multilingualism includes a two-year roadmap that began in January 2024, with milestones for regular updates.

Why does Multilingualism matter?

IMO understands that effective communication is key to achieving its mission. As part of its Strategic Framework for Multilingualism, IMO is committed to using its six official languages
