IMO has collaborated with the World Maritime University (WMU) and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) to raise awareness of key issues in maritime transport policy through a webinar (held 15-19 November 2021) for IMLI students. This year's annual teaching exercise was the sixth, with revised training material, prepared in collaboration with WMU.
The updated educational content builds on material in use since 2015. It introduces, inter alia, the concept of a maritime transport policy and its importance to the development of maritime legislation by highlighting the close relationship between policy and legislation.
Over 50 IMLI students attended the webinar and participated in a practical group exercise to familiarize themselves with the concept of a National Maritime Transport Policy (NMTP). This included defining the scope and reach of an NMTP and its basic characteristics for a hypothetical IMO member State and indicating how such a policy would be developed.
