Investigation into marine casualty and marine incidents is critical in order to learn from such incidents. A two-week regional training course on marine casualty and incident investigation has been held for countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region (5-16 November).
This training course facilitated the development of institutional capacities and expertise in the field of investigation into marine casualty and marine incidents. The main objective was to update the knowledge of the existing casualty investigators on the IMO Code of the International Standards and Recommended Practices for a Safety Investigation into marine casualty or marine incident (Casualty Investigation Code), resolution MSC.255(84) as well as resolution A.1075(28) – Guidelines to assist investigators in the implementation of the Casualty Investigation Code.
The training course aimed at assisting the national maritime Administrations to uniformly carry out investigations into marine casualties and incidents in accordance with the Casualty Investigation Code, through addressing the Guidelines on fair treatment of seafarers in the event of a maritime accident (Assembly Resolution A.987(24)) and reporting marine casualties and incidents to IMO (MSC-MEPC.3/Circ.5).
The training course facilitated the exchange of information between investigators, to promote cooperation in the conduct of investigations at the regional level.
The course was attended by 26 participants from eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and was organized by IMO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Qatar.
