An IMO team is in the Comoros on a fact-finding and needs assessment mission to assist the country in the development of its maritime sector and to ensure the fulfilment of its flag, port and coastal State obligations. During the mission (29 February – 4 March) the team is focusing on topics such as ship registration and the effective survey and certification of ships flying the flag of the Comoros.

Activities include a Maritime Awareness Seminar (29 February), which was attended by thirty participants representing various ministries, departments and agencies involved in the administration of maritime affairs in the country.

The mission is being carried out by Nicolaos Charalambous and Jonathan Pace, Technical Cooperation Division, together with Raphael Baumler, WMU Associate Professor, and Frederic Hebert, former Director of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC).
