Diversity at Sea: IMO photo competition for Black History Month
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is excited to announce a photography competition in honour of Black History Month this October. The theme for this year’s photo contest is ‘Diversity at Sea,’ celebrating multiculturalism within the maritime sector.
IMO invites photo submissions from all skill levels showcasing unique perspectives on maritime life. Whether capturing diverse crews, the rich cultural mosaic of port cities, or the daily experiences of maritime professionals worldwide, we want your interpretation of ‘Diversity at Sea’.
New toolkit to curb insider security threat in the maritime sector
IMO has launched a new toolkit that will help the global maritime industry respond better to ever-evolving ‘insider threats’. Insider threat refers to the risk that arises from a maritime employee carrying out or enabling a security incident, either through a lack of awareness, complacency or maliciousness.

Supporting the Philippines’ preparedness and response to hazardous and noxious marine spills
Spill preparedness training in Manila, Philippines has helped to reinforce the country’s ability to tackle marine spills involving hazardous and noxious substances (HNS).
A national workshop (29-31 July) led by IMO tested the country’s preparedness and response systems, identifying areas for improvement in the National Spill Contingency Plan (NSCP).
IMO approves interim guidance on fishing vessel safety
The IMO Sub-Committee on the Implementation of IMO Instruments (III) has approved interim guidance to assist Member States in the implementation of the Cape Town Agreement. The 2012 Cape Town Agreement (CTA) is the global treaty for safety of fishing vessels. This internationally binding instrument sets minimum requirements on the design, construction, equipment, and inspection of fishing vessels of 24 meters and over in length, or equivalent in gross tons.
Digitalization for maritime safety
