UN EMG Heads of Agencies Dialogue: Pledging Commitments to Implement the Common approach on Biodiversity and the Post-2022 Global Biodiversity Framework

Video message by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim to the

United Nations Environment Management Group (EMG)  Heads of Agencies Dialogue: Pledging Commitments to Implement the Common approach on Biodiversity and the Post-2022 Global Biodiversity Framework,

15 December 2022

Excellencies, distinguished delegates,

I regret that I am not able to be with you in person today at this important meeting to further our common approach to biodiversity.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the UN specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping, the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution, transfer of invasive species by ships and dumping of wastes at sea.

The continued implementation of IMO's well-established global regulatory framework on marine environment protection supports our common efforts to address some of the challenges the planet is facing including climate change and to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

On behalf of IMO, I would like to express our support for the adoption and implementation of a transformative Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework at this COP.

IMO looks forward to continuing our work with all stakeholders and to further strengthening international cooperation to protect and rebuild the biodiversity upon which we all rely.

Thank you.
