Joint Master programme on Maritime Safety and Environmental Management
10 July, Dalian University, China
Speech by IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a genuine pleasure for me to be here with you to mark the start of this important WMU-DMU Joint Master's degree programme on Maritime Safety and Environmental Management.
This is a programme specifically designed to meet the needs of the maritime industry for highly-specialized professionals. You are all fortunate to be here – but this programme is also fortunate to have such highly qualified students taking part. It really is a "win-win" situation!
You are embarking on this stage of your studies as IMO celebrates two significant milestones – 70 years since the Organization was formed with the adoption of the IMO Convention and 60 since it became operational.
IMO can be very proud of its achievements. Many important treaties have been adopted and implemented in the past decades, making shipping safer, more secure, more efficient and more environment-friendly. I am sure, you will be learning more about this during your studies.
