Special recognition for merchant vessels and their crew involved in the rescue of mixed migrants at sea
This form of recognition was established in 2015, at the twenty-ninth session of the Assembly, following the adoption of resolution A.1093(29). At its 129th session in 2023, the Council approved the revision of this resolution to allow the submission of nominations by intergovernmental organizations in cooperation with IMO (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO (NGOs) for this recognition. Subsequently, at its thirty-third session in 2023, the Assembly adopted resolution
A.1195(33).
This special recognition is a commendation of the IMO Assembly, in the form of a certificate, for the bravery, professionalism and compassion displayed by crews of merchant vessels in the rescue of migrants around the world. IMO Member States, IGOs and NGOs are invited to provide information on deserving crews of merchant vessels by means of Circular Letter No.4833. Forms can be submitted for acts that have been performed from 1 January 2014. There is no deadline for submissions or judging process.
