Advancing green shipping in the Caribbean
A green shipping conference in Belize City, Belize (10-11 July) has boosted IMO’s work to support Caribbean countries in decarbonizing their maritime sector. The event gathered more than 80 maritime stakeholders from 18 countries and territories in the Caribbean region to focus on implementing the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of Geenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships (2023 IMO GHG Strategy).
Action plan to boost oil spill response in the Black Sea
Countries bordering the Black Sea have outlined an action plan to strengthen the oil spill response capabilities of the region and better protect the marine environment. Fifteen government officials from Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Türkiye and Ukraine developed the action plan during a workshop organized by IMO in Bucharest, Romania (10-12 July).
Navigating biofouling management: key training series held in Panama

Panama hosted an intensive training series for biofouling management specialists from Latin America and the Caribbean (8-12 July) to address the issue.

Iraq to establish maritime single window for major ports
Iraq is embracing the move to digitalize its maritime sector, with plans to establish a maritime single window for the major ports of Um Qasr (North and South). A team of IMO experts completed a mission to Basra (30 June - 4 July) to identify what support the country needs to deliver on its ambitions.
Support offered to developing countries for National Plans to reduce ship GHG emissions
IMO is inviting expressions of interest from developing countries for support to create National Action Plans (NAPs) to reduce GHG emissions from shipping. This technical support, provided through the GreenVoyage2050 programme, offers a unique opportunity for eligible developing countries to develop tailored NAPs that address their specific maritime challenges.
Women’s career fair seeks new talent in ship recycling
Ship recycling companies in Bangladesh have confirmed their intentions to hire more women, after acknowledging the “wasted talent” in an industry that has traditionally barred females from employment. A careers fair organised by IMO’s SENSREC Project in collaboration with WISTA Bangladesh, focused on supporting women’s access to the country’s ship recycling sector.
Maritime security training underway in Ethiopia
Ethiopian maritime security officials are enhancing their knowledge and skills around flag State control and compliance through an IMO workshop taking pace in Addis Ababa (1-5 July). It is the latest in a series of workshops delivered by IMO under the EU-funded Red Sea Project.
