Joanna Toole environment grant launched
Fighting against the impacts of ghost gear and marine litter was a passion for the late Joanna Toole, former FAO staff member, who was tragically killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed en route to Nairobi on 10 March 2019. To honour her work, a marine environment grant has been created.
Enhancing maritime security in Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden – website launched
Regional cooperation is crucial in the fight against piracy and armed robbery against ships and other illicit maritime activities. A new website www.dcoc.org highlights the Djibouti Code of Conduct, adopted under the auspices of IMO which has been instrumental in containing the threat of piracy in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
Norway boosts funding for GreenVoyage2050 Project
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project has received in additional funding to continue assisting developing countries in their efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions from ships.
IMO environment meeting set to adopt GHG cutting measures
The 76th meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 76), which addresses environmental issues under IMO’s remit, has begun. It will run from 10 to 17 June in remote session.
Spain accedes to ship recycling convention
Spain is the latest country to accede to IMO's treaty for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling – the Hong Kong Convention. The Convention covers the design, construction, operation and maintenance of ships, and preparation for ship recycling in order to facilitate safe and environmentally sound recycling, without compromising the safety and operational efficiency of ships.
Marine fuel stakeholders encouraged to access free workshop
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project has launched a free-to-access 'Alternative Fuels and Energy Carriers for Maritime Shipping' workshop package to help users identify key next steps to explore when considering the uptake of new low- and zero-carbon fuels.
Maritime legal courses for developing countries delivered online
Knowledge of maritime legal matters is crucial for development. To support ongoing education during the COVID-19 pandemic, 103 officials from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and from the seven IMO-established Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs) were recently awarded fellowships to undertake short professional development courses organized by the IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI).
