Learning about wreck removal
IMO’s Jan de Boer has delivered the opening presentation on the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks at a meeting at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam (2 April) organized by the Netherlands Maritime Law Association and attended by some 150 lawyers and transport professionals, including seven Court Judges.
Maritime law enforcement students graduate
All 24 participants from 14 countries have completed the three-week Maritime Law Enforcement course, at the Border Guards Maritime Training Institute, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (15 March to 1 April), sponsored by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Enhancing maritime security in Cabo Verde
A table top exercise on maritime security is taking
place in Sao Vicente Island, Cabo Verde (31 March – 1 April) with the
aim of encouraging a multi-agency, whole of Government approach to
maritime security and maritime law enforcement issues using a range of
evolving scenarios. Organized by the Cape Verde Maritime Authority, run
by a team of IMO consultants and attended by a host of national agencies
– the exercise follows the IMO/MOWCA (MoU) and the Code
of Conduct concerning the prevention of piracy, armed robbery against

IMO Bravery Award - deadline for nominations
The final deadline for nominations for the 2015 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea is 15 April. The Award recognizes those who, at the risk of losing their own life, perform acts of exceptional bravery, display outstanding courage
in attempting to save life at sea or in attempting to prevent or
mitigate damage to the marine environment. Nominations for the Award may
be made by United Nations Member States; intergovernmental
organizations; and/or non-governmental international organizations in

Supporting domestic ferry safety in the Pacific
IMO has taken part in the Pacific
Forum on Domestic Ferry Safety in Suva, Fiji (25-27 March), which
considered the progress of Pacific Island countries and territories
following the last meeting of the Forum in 2012, at which a 12-point Action Plan
to improve domestic ferry safety had been developed. Nicolaos
Charalambous, Director Technical Cooperation Division, represented IMO
at the event, which was jointly organized by IMO and the Secretariat of
the Pacific Community (SPC) and funded by IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).

Underwater-radiated noise from commercial ships may have negative consequences on marine life, especially marine mammals. IMO’s Edward Kleverlaan, Head, Office for LC/LP & Ocean Affairs, has outlined IMO’s work on measures to reduce underwater noise, at the World Organisation of Dredging Associations (WODA) Workshop on Underwater Sound in Relation to Dredging, in Paris, France (26 March).

Boosting regional maritime security coordination in west and central Africa
A regional workshop organized by IMO, in cooperation with the Government of Angola, is being held in Luanda, Angola (24-27 March), to discuss the implementation of the Code of Conduct concerning the repression of piracy, armed robbery against ships and illicit maritime activity in west and central Africa, through the establishment of the Inter-regional Coordination Centre (ICC), to be based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
