Tackling fishing vessel safety

Bali, Indonesia, is hosting the latest in a series of IMO regional seminars aimed at ratification and implementation of the 2012 Cape Town Agreement on safety of fishing vessels. The sub-regional seminar (13-17 April), which is being held in consultation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is being attended by participants from 12 countries in the east and southeast Asia region, where more than 70% of the global fishing fleet is based. (Photo: ISSF)

Supporting maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea

A regional workshop “Gulf of Guinea
Maritime Security and Law Enforcement” is taking place in Yaoundé,
Cameroon (13-16 April) focusing on the implementation of the Code of Conduct
concerning the repression of piracy, armed robbery against ships, and
illicit maritime activity in West and Central Africa. The workshop
brings together officials from the United States, Europe, and Central
and West Africa to address maritime crime, international legal
frameworks, related criminal justice gaps and capacity building in the

Kenya ratifies Nairobi Wreck Removal treaty

Kenya has ratified the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks. Ms Nancy Karigithu, Director General, Kenya Maritime Authority, handed over the instrument of ratification to IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu at the opening of the Legal Committee’s 102nd session, on the day the Convention entered into force internationally (14 April).

​​Legal Committee begins 102nd session

IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu has opened the Legal Committee, 102nd session (14-16 April), which is being chaired by Mr. Kofi Mbiah (Ghana). Items on the agenda include: the HNS Protocol, 2010; liability and compensation issues connected with transboundary pollution damage from offshore oil exploration and exploitation; and interpretation of the 1992 Fund Convention.

IMO at UN digital agenda meeting

IMO’s Vincent Job is in Copenhagen, Denmark, attending the 24th session of the UN Chief Executive Board’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Network (13-14 April 2015). The network functions as a forum to coordinate UN system-wide ICT policy and practices. The meeting agenda includes:  the “digital agenda” for the UN system; data revolution; the enterprise resource planning (ERP) interoperability study; and implementation of the Cyber Security Framework.

Sekimizu urges ratification

IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu delivered a passionate appeal for ratification of the Ballast Water Management Convention during his opening address to the Panama Maritime XII conference in Panama City (12 April). In a wide-ranging speech, he said that IMO measures have enabled shipping to become safe, secure, environment friendly and energy-efficient, and provided the bedrock on which it can continue to develop and flourish in a sustainable way.

Key milestone in ship recycling industry

A new project entitled “Safe and environmentally sound ship recycling in Bangladesh” has been launched in Dhaka, Bangladesh (8 April). It constitutes a key milestone on the road to improve safety and environmental standards within the industry and is the result of collaborative work between The Government of Bangladesh, IMO, the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).
