IMO’s Colleen O’Hagan has emphasized
the importance of widespread ratification of international conventions
relating to marine pollution at a workshop on trans-boundary maritime
environmental pollution, taking place in Brisbane, Australia (20-22
May). The course, aimed at technical and policy officials from ASEAN
countries with operational and policy responsibility for maritime

Symposium looks at maritime education and training
The World Maritime University is hosting an international symposium focused on Maritime & Oceans Education and Training (MET) in its new home in Malmo, Sweden (19-20 May). IMO senior staff in attendance will be discussing a variety of topics covering contemporary challenges for the maritime community, scenarios for the future, and optimum responses for all sectors of the industry.
IMO publications featured in Russia
IMO publications are being promoted at the “Marine Industry of Russia”
international forum in Moscow, Russia (19-21 May) which is focused on
various matters relating to shipbuilding. Titles promoted include the
latest, consolidated version of the International Convention for the
Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) publication, details of which can be found
here. IMO’s Bianka Ochs-Fawzy and Victor Mackenney were in attendance.

Boosting maritime domain awareness in West Indian Ocean
A regional workshop on mechanisms for promoting maritime domain awareness in the West Indian Ocean is taking place (18-20 May) in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, with 45 participants from east andsouthern Africa. The workshop aims to identify and address existing maritime domain awareness gaps and is being jointly organized by IMO, NAVAF, EASF, NACS and EUNAVFOR, under the auspices of the Djibouti Regional Training Centre (DRTC). United for Wildlife
IMO's Chris Trelawny is at International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) headquarters for the second meeting (18 May) of the United for Wildlife task force.IMO partnered with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to present the IMO/WCO framework for risk assessment in the context of security threats and to consider how maritime security and counter-piracy experience could be applied to suppression of illegal wildlife trade.
Africa flag State workshop begins
A five-day regional workshop (18-22 May) on flag State implementation has begun in Accra, Ghana, with 20 participants from eight countries (Capo Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe and Sierra Leone). Participants will be guided through various aspects of flag State implementation, with a view to preparing countries for the forthcoming IMO mandatory audit scheme.
Implementing conventions in Timor-Leste
A workshop and technical mission has been held in Dili, Timor-Leste (12-14 May) to assist the country in ratifying key IMO conventions. Timor-Leste has been a Member of IMO since 2005. Officials attending the workshop included representatives of the Committee on National Infrastructure of the Parliament, the National Directorate for Maritime Transport, the Ministry of Public Works, Transportation and Communication and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Islamic Republic of Iran visits
The marine environment was on the agenda as Dr Parvin Farshchi, Deputy Vice President and Head of Maritime Affairs of DOE of Iran and Mrs Mandana Mansoorian, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to IMO, paid a courtesy call to IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu at IMO Headquarters today (13 May). Topics discussed included future collaboration in areas of ballast water management, marine litter under the London Protocol and special and particularly sensitive sea areas.
