Scrubbers under scrutiny
IMO’s Masao Yamasaki presented at the Lloyds Maritime Academy training workshop on “A Practical Guide to Scrubber Systems: Cost and performance analysis of exhaust gas cleaning systems” (27-28 January). Mr Yamasaki outlined IMO guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems and informed participants on the latest work in relation to MARPOL Annex VI. IMO’s Astrid Dispert is also attending the workshop.
Maritime security systems seminar in Mauritius
An IMO-led seminar on the Automatic Identification System (AIS), Long-Range Identification and Tracking of ships (LRIT), Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) and other communication systems for maritime security has been taking place in Port Louis, Mauritius (27-28 January). IMO’s Javier Yasnikouski and Henrik Madsen are leading the event, which is being attended by participants from the office of the Prime Minister and a range of national agencies. (click to read more)
Cook Islands boost for TC funds
The Cook Islands has paid its annual financial assessment to IMO and advised the Secretary-General that its funds accumulated under the Organization’s Contributions Incentive Scheme are to be transferred for use in technical cooperation projects. His Excellency Captain Ian Finley, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Cook Islands to IMO delivered the payment and the news today (27 January).
IMO at ship recycling workshop
IMO’s Simone Leyers is in Brussels, Belgium to provide an update on implementation of IMO’s Hong Kong Ship Recycling Convention to participants at the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) Technical Workshop on Ship Recycling (27 January), which is being hosted by ECSA with participation from the EU Commission, EU Member States, Recycling States (India and Bangladesh) and shipowners. The first World Maritime University (WMU) Regional Alumni Conference is taking place in Yangon, Myanmar (27-28 January). Mrs. Pamela Tansey, Senior Deputy Director, Technical Cooperation Division, is representing IMO at the conference, which will focus current developments in maritime education, in line with the World Maritime Day theme for 2015 – “Maritime education and training”. Maritime education and training was a key theme during
IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu’s official visit to Egypt (23-26 January), which
included courtesy visits to the President, the Prime Minister, the Transport
Minister, the Interior Minister and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States. The Secretary-General toured the facilities of the Arab Academy for Science,
Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) and addressed students graduating
from the Academy’s College of Maritime Transport and Technology. (read

IMO technical officers see vessel traffic services in action
Staff from IMO’s Maritime Safety Division gained some first-hand knowledge of vessel traffic services when they visited the Port of London Authority (PLA) Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) (on 16 January). Discussions on current and emerging trends in vessel traffic services were followed by a visit to the PLA bridge simulator and a chance to see the London VTS in operation.
The Sudan accedes to environmental treaties
H.E. Mr Mohammed A. Eltom, Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Sudan, today (21 January) met IMO
Secretary-General Sekimizu to present the Sudan’s instruments of accession to the
International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL)
and the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and
Co-operation (OPRC
90).
Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Sudan, today (21 January) met IMO
Secretary-General Sekimizu to present the Sudan’s instruments of accession to the
International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL)
and the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and
Co-operation (OPRC
90).
