Cargoes and containers on agenda
IMO Sec-Gen Sekimizu has opened the Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC), 1st session (8 to 12 September), which is being chaired by Mr. Xie Hui of China.
Role of transit transport corridors
IMO’s Ivaylo Valev participated in the International High-level Conference on the role of Transit Transport Corridors in ensuring International Cooperation and Sustainable Development, held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (3 to 4 September).
Oil spill response training in China
IMO is providing training in Yantai, China, at an International Oil Spill Response Technical Seminar (2-3 September), followed by an OPRC Training course for level 3 commanders of oil spill response (4-5 September), both hosted by the China Maritime Safety Administration. The seminar and course are being held under the IMO/IPIECA Global Initiative.
Maldives set to join LRIT system
IMO and the Transport Authority of the Maldives are running a national seminar (1-2 September) on Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) in Male, Maldives. Opening the seminar, the Maldives Minister of Defence and National Security, Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, stated his country’s intention to join the LRIT system.
GESAMP streaming ocean noise seminar
The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) is meeting for its 41st session (1 to 4 September) at World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden. An open seminar on “Maritime activities and noise: Sources and Impacts” will be live-streamed on 3 September.
Supporting SIDS
IMO is participating in the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (1 to 4 September) in Apia, Samoa. The conference is focusing on the sustainable development of SIDS through genuine and durable partnerships. Visit www.sids2014.org

Secretary-General Visits Maritime Museum
IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu visited the Royal Museums Greenwich (including the National Maritime Museum) London, where he discussed maritime heritage with the Director Dr. Kevin Fewster. Look at the photos of his visit.
South Pacific security training
IMO’s Sascha Pristrom has led a regional maritime security workshop for South Pacific countries, in Suva, Fiji (25-27 August). Training covered port and ship security to assist States in coping with the security challenges posed by the region-wide increase in passenger ship calls and LNG-terminal capacity.
