Voice of freedom
An Indian seafarer held hostage for nearly four years by Somali pirates was at IMO Headquarters yesterday (29 September). Aman Kumar Sharma, one of 11 crew members of the MV Albedo released in June this year, spoke at an event organised by the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme.

UK maritime minister visits IMO
The Rt Hon John Hayes MP, recently appointed Minister of State at the Department for Transport (with responsibility for maritime matters) of IMO’s host country, the United Kingdom, visited IMO Secretary-General Sekimizu today (24 September) for a courtesy visit and handed over a letter of congratulations for World Maritime Day.
Combating piracy and armed robbery
IMO’s Henrik Madsen is presenting at the 2nd Annual Expanded ASEAN Seafarer Training on Counter Piracy workshop in Manila, Philippines (24-26 September). The workshop is being hosted jointly by the Philippines Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the US Maritime Administration and Department of State.
Facilitation Committee meets
IMO Sec-Gen Sekimizu has opened the Facilitation Committee (FAL), 39th session (22 to 29 September), which is being chaired by Mr. Yury Melenas (Russian Federation). Topics on the agenda include: review of the FAL Convention; electronic access to, or electronic versions of, certificates and documents; matters related to stowaways; and training of mooring personnel.

Sec-Gen tours Gris-Nez search and rescue centre
IMO Sec-Gen Sekimizu was given an in-depth overview of the day-to-day activities at the Gris-Nez Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in northern France, when he visited the centre (on 17 September) on the invitation of the French Government.
Delivering as one on sea and air
The 21st session of the ICAO/IMO Joint Working Group on Harmonization of Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue is meeting at IMO (15 to 19 September). Items on the agenda include draft amendments to the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual. Participants will share experiences of search and rescue operations, including the response to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. (Pic: USCG)
