KCC Corporation joins the Global Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety
KCC Corporation, based in the Republic of Korea, is the latest company to join the Global Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety, a platform for industry collaboration set up under IMO's GloFouling Partnerships project. The members of the GIA represent a wide range of maritime industries with an interest in ship's biofouling management.
IMO supports regional training on emergent threats to maritime security
IMO experts on maritime security and the Djibouti Code of Conduct are participating in a regional training programme on Combating New and Emerging Threats to Maritime Security (14-24 February) at the Jeddah Academy for Maritime Science and Security Studies in Saudi Arabia.
Red Sea Project on maritime security launched
The Regional Programme for Maritime Security in the Red Sea Area ('Red Sea Project') has been launched at the Djibouti Regional Training Centre (10 February). The project, funded by the European Union, focuses on supporting Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen across key areas of maritime security.
Responding to Peru oil spill
IMO is supporting international efforts to assist Peru in oil spill response, following an oil spill which occurred north of Lima on 15 January.
IMO debuts interactive GHG SMART workshop series
IMO's new GHG SMART workshop series will assist LDCs and SIDS in implementing the IMO GHG Strategy and addressing other GHG-related issues in their regions.
Supporting the Philippines on seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping
The Philippines has benefited from two capacity-building workshops on IMO's key convention on seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping (the STCW Convention*). The pilot scheme activities on 'Assessment and Examination of Seafarers' (September to October 2021) and the 'Principles of Curriculum Development' (December 2021 to January 2022) focused on effective implementation.
Solutions for abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear
Fishing gear may be lost or discarded at sea, adding to the growing quantity of plastic waste at sea and on beaches. Two new studies from the global GloLitter Partnerships project, which aims to reduce sea-based marine plastic litter, address this phenomenon. The reports outline case studies which may offer a way forward to tackle abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear, also referred to as ALDFG or ghost gear.
IMO fishing safety webinar series encourages ratification of key treaty
IMO has completed a series of regional webinars aimed at increasing support for the 2012 Cape Town Agreement on fishing vessel safety.
IMO supports Women in Ports management capacity building
Women from Francophone Africa are building skills in port management during a two week online course (17 – 28 January) that will include a visit to the French port of Le Havre in the spring. The annual course is supported by IMO in collaboration with IPER and HAROPA Port.
