International Quality Assessment Review Body (IQARB) supports IMO Member States
The International Quality Assessment Review Body (IQARB) is due to update IMO Member States on its work supporting States to fulfil their obligations under IMO mandatory instruments. An online lunchtime presentation on Thursday 28 July, held during IMO's Sub-Committee on Implementation of IMO Instruments (III), will take place for participating Member States.
Progress on safer, greener domestic passenger ships in Philippines
IMO has contributed to the next steps to enhance safety and energy efficiency of domestic passenger ships in the Philippines. A team of experts* undertook a field visit to Manila, Iloilo and Cebu, the Philippines (3-9 July) to see up close how the safety system in the Philippines operates.
Security training for Honduras port officials
IMO has organised a port security workshop in San Pedro Sula, Honduras as part of its capacity building support for Member States. The workshop (18-22 July) primarily focuses on SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and ISPS Code for Designated Authorities (DA) and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs), thereby supporting officials to perform their duties in line with IMO maritime security measures.
Spanish resources for emission reductions
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project has published its ship and ports emissions toolkits in Spanish. The free resources, which are also available in English, provide structured frameworks as well as decision support tools for evaluating emissions reduction opportunities in maritime transport.
Decarbonisation strategy roundtables launched in Kenya
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 project has launched a series of roundtables on the creation of National Action Plans (NAPs) to address GHG emissions from shipping, with the first event held in collaboration with the Government of Kenya on 12 July.
Working towards Brazil’s National Maritime Policy
Brazil is the latest country to benefit from IMO's work promoting good governance practice in the maritime sector to support sustainable development. A National Workshop on Maritime Transport Policy was organised in Brasilia, Brazil (5-7 July) by IMO, in close cooperation with the Brazilian Navy.
Strengthening port security in Tunisia
Strengthening port security is the focus of a workshop underway in Hammamet, Tunisia (4-8 July). Thirty-six participants from Tunisia’s Ministry of Transport, Port Authority, stevedoring companies, and other entities directly involved in port security, are developing ways in which to collaborate and cooperate at the national level with a view to enhancing implementation and compliance with international requirements.
Newest generation of maritime law specialists graduate
The IMO International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) has celebrated the graduation 56 international law specialists from 37 countries who have completed various courses at the Institution. The ceremony, held on 1 July, was the first hybrid (in person and virtual) IMLI graduation.
Continuing IMO's "Voyage Together"
IMO has received an additional US$2.0 million donation to its 'Delivering Strategy and Reform – Voyage Together' multi-donor trust fund (VTTF). The VTTF promotes the effective implementation of IMO's international conventions, IMO's global stature, capacity building of developing countries, shared growth of all Member States; and strategy development and reform initiatives to enhance the performance of the Secretariat.
