IMO Secretary-General to visit Odesa
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim is scheduled to visit the port of Odesa on Monday (29 August), to see at first-hand the implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and hear how ship safety and port management is being implemented. IMO Secretary-General Lim is expected to board a ship and speak to seafarers. The IMO Secretary-General will be hosted by the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
Strengthening National Oil Spill Contingency Plans in the Caribbean
The latest activities in IMO's ongoing work to support Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS) on oil spill contingency planning have taken place in Dominica (16-18 August) and the Dominican Republic (22-24 August).
IMO conducts needs assessment on Malawi maritime sector
IMO has conducted a needs assessment mission to Malawi (22-26 August) to assess and support the country's maritime sector. As well as identifying gaps in the Malawian maritime administration, the objectives of the mission were to make recommendations on the enactment of regulations to support and provide an oversight function to the marine college by the relevant government ministry.
Maritime Administration in the Caribbean takes centre-stage
The Regional Meeting for Directors and Heads of Maritime Administrations (formerly known as the Workshop of Senior Maritime Administrators), jointly organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS), was held in Paramaribo, Suriname (28-29 July 2022).
Just transition for decarbonization highlighted at Asia-Pacific meeting
IMO has highlighted the Organization's work to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping at the annual gathering of Asia Pacific Heads of Maritime Safety Agencies (APHoMSA), remotely hosted by the Cook Islands (26-28 July).
Maritime security support for Mauritius
A port facility security assessment is underway in Port Louis, Mauritius (1-5 August) led by a team of IMO experts. The assessment is being carried out under IMO's EU-funded Port Security Project with a view to preparing port facility security plans.
One step closer for Kenya’s National Maritime Security Strategy
Key officials from Kenyan Government Ministries and Agencies responsible for maritime security have attended a workshop (25-29 July) to review and finalize the country’s draft National Maritime Security Risk Register.
IMO welcomes first ship departure under Black Sea Grain Initiative
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has welcomed the departure from Odesa of the first commercial ship to leave the port under the United Nations supported Black Sea Grain Initiative to establish a humanitarian maritime corridor for the safe passage of ships from Ukraine.
IMO to help Belize address emissions from shipping
The IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 team is supporting the government of Belize to set up a National Action Plan (NAP) to address GHG emissions from shipping and draft legislation to enshrine MARPOL Annex VI into national regulation.
