Boosting oil spill preparedness skills in Cuba
Ensuring government authorities’ personnel are equipped with the skills and knowledge to design effective plans to respond in the event of an oil pollution incident was the focus of a national workshop in Havana, Cuba (13-16 June). Participants learnt about hazards to responders, the effects of an oil spill on the local environment, as well as about oil spill contingency planning, response strategies and tactics, and management of response resources.
Expanding maritime security law drafting skills in the United Republic of Tanzania
Staff at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communication and Technology in the United Republic of Tanzania are taking part in a workshop in Zanzibar (19-23 June) on how to transpose international IMO instruments dealing with maritime security into domestic legislation.
Korea Maritime Week celebrates women in maritime
The importance of women in the maritime industry was marked at an event on the first day of Korea Maritime Week (14-16 June) in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Kitack Lim, IMO Secretary-General, delivered a message of congratulation, in which he encouraged women to pursue advancement to the top levels of the maritime sector.

IMO joins Asia-Pacific Heads of Maritime Safety Agencies annual meeting
IMO updated Asia-Pacific Heads of Maritime Safety Agencies (APHoMSA) on its work on the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions at its annual meeting which took place in Sydney, Australia (5-8 June). The IMO delegation was taking part as one of several invited observers, alongside representatives from 26 countries.
IMO Secretary-General statement on migrant boat tragedy off Greece
The International Maritime Organization’s Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, has expressed his profound sadness about the large loss of life when a heavily overcrowded boat carrying hundreds of people capsized on 14 June off the coast of Greece.
Training auditors in the Asian Sub-region
IMO is continuing its work to help assess how Member States administer key IMO treaties to ensure its regulatory framework is universally adopted and implemented. A five-day training course (19-23 June in Port Klang, Malaysia) will equip qualified officials from IMO Member States from the Asian Sub-region with the auditing knowledge and skills to assist in ensuring the effective implementation of the applicable IMO instruments, and to assist Member States to improve their capabilities.
Assisting Mozambique to draft its maritime security laws
The IMO Maritime Security team is in Maputo, Mozambique, to train staff in the country’s Ministry of Transport and Communication on the transposition of international IMO instruments related to maritime security into the country's domestic legislation. The workshop is taking place across five days (12-16 June).
Galapagos Islands workshop on biofouling management in marine protected areas
The Galapagos Islands, home to some of the world's most uniquely endemic wildlife species, hosted an IMO international workshop on biofouling management to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Particularly sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs). The event (6-9 June) brought together marine biology scientists and related experts from all corners of the world to discuss methods and best practices for preventing the damaging introduction of invasive species via ships' biofouling.
