Capacity building to manage the risks of biofouling

A series of training courses has taken place in several regions, designed to build capacity by increasing awareness of marine biofouling and the damage it can cause as a vector for the transfer of invasive aquatic species from one marine ecosystem to another. The “Introduction to Marine Biofouling: Impacts and Management of Risks” course provided a detailed introduction to biofouling, along with management solutions and technologies available to tackle it.

Saving lives in Africa through information sharing on search and rescue

Latest developments on search and rescue (SAR) procedures, techniques and equipment are being discussed at a workshop for representatives from five regional maritime rescue coordination centres (MRCCs) in Africa. The event in Cape Town (13-17 November) is a chance for the countries taking part - Kenya, Liberia, Morrocco, Nigeria and South Africa – to hear about recent changes brought about by modernization of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and about new mobile satellite services.

Strategic approach to implementing Djibouti Code of Conduct on maritime security

States around the western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden have agreed to develop a common regional maritime security strategy. The aim is to achieve increased prosperity through the adoption of a multi-agency, multi-disciplinary approach to maritime security, governance and law enforcement.

The Signatory States to the Djibouti Code of Conduct (DCoC) and its Jeddah Amendment concerning the security of the western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden were meeting at the Sixth High-level Regional Meeting on the implementation of the Jeddah Amendment to the Djibouti Code of Conduct in Cape Town, South Africa (24-26 October).

The latest batch of future maritime leaders have graduated from the World Maritime University (WMU). The 2023 graduation (28 October) saw 283 graduates from 71 countries receive their Masters and Doctorate awards, including a record-breaking 99 female graduates and ten PhD graduates.
