Technical feasibility assessment on shipping decarbonization
A study on the readiness and availability of low- and zero-carbon ship technology and marine fuels suggests that achieving a more ambitious decarbonization pathway than business as usual is feasible, with a strengthened level of ambition and implementation of further GHG reduction measures. The research was commissioned by IMO under its Future Fuels and Technology for Low- and Zero-Carbon Shipping Project.

Significant progress was made on the development of Solomon Islands’ National Action Plan when the IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 project team visited the Pacific country last week.
First e-learning course in Spanish now available
Spanish speakers interested in maritime issues can now access the first free to access course in Spanish available on the IMO e-learning platform. The "Introduction to Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation" course is aimed at stakeholders from the maritime industry and individuals new to the oil spill response community.
The Secretary-General’s statement on piracy incidents in Gulf of Guinea
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim said: “I am deeply concerned over the recent kidnapping of six crew members from the MV Monjasa Reformer on 25 March 2023 and reports of an ongoing incident involving a tanker in the Gulf of Guinea."
Addressing ship-to-ship oil transfers and tankers in the “dark fleet”
The dangerous practice of ship-to-ship transfers in the open ocean, as well as the methods used to obscure ship identities and turning off AIS transponders, were discussed by the Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization at its 110th session at IMO Headquarters in London (27-31 March).
Candidates for Secretary-General of IMO
Seven IMO Member States have each nominated a candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The term of the current incumbent, Mr. Kitack Lim of the Republic of Korea, expires on 31 December 2023.
Global maritime training institutions to get accommodation upgrade
Students at the World Maritime University and the IMO International Maritime Law Institute are to benefit from an injection of funding worth US$500,000 for the refurbishment of accommodation facilities at the two institutions courtesy of the multi-donor Voyage Together Trust Fund.
Portugal accedes to ship recycling convention
Portugal is the latest country to accede to IMO's treaty for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling – the Hong Kong Convention. The Convention covers the design, construction, operation and maintenance of ships, and preparation for ship recycling in order to facilitate safe and environmentally sound recycling, without compromising the safety and operational efficiency of ships.
Tackling marine litter through port reception facilities
A new guide to support countries to put in place port reception facilities to receive marine plastic litter from ships has been published. It outlines the costs of operating a port reception facility and the revenue that such facilities can generate.
