Building mechanisms to enhance security in the Red Sea Area

As part of the "Regional Programme for Maritime Security in the Red Sea Area" (Red Sea Project), IMO took part in a regional maritime law enforcement forum in Addis Ababa (27-28 November) organised by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The event was designed to enhance awareness of the regional maritime domain and to promote dialogue in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Supporting Samoa to digitalize its port call operations

Participants at a National Seminar on Facilitation of Maritime Traffic (27-29 November) in Apia, Samoa are learning about the benefits of using the Maritime Single Window and Electronic Data Interchange in facilitating ships’ clearance in Samoa’s ports. From 1 January 2024, amendments to the Facilitation Convention (FAL Convention) enter into force which make the implementation of Maritime Single Windows (MSWs) by ports mandatory.

Ensuring efficient port procedures in the Cook Islands

IMO is supporting the Cook Islands to accede to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL), a key treaty aimed at achieving the most efficient maritime transport as possible, through the smooth transit in ports of ships, cargo and passengers. A National Seminar on Facilitation of Maritime Traffic in Rarotonga, Cook Islands (21-23 November) provided advice on the latest amendments to the Annex to the FAL Convention which were adopted in 2022 and which will enter into force on 1 January 2024.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has opened the 33rd session of the IMO Assembly (A 33), which is meeting at IMO Headquarters in London from 27 November – 6 December 2023. For the first time, the Assembly decided to livestream the plenary proceedings* to the public.
