Supporting Kenya to implement the MARPOL Convention
Transposing the provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) into national legislation, to meet current and future obligations, was the focus of an in-person workshop in Mombasa, Kenya (15-18 May). Participants
included graduates from the IMO International Maritime Law Institute and
the World Maritime University.
Pacific nations updated on IMO work to reduce emissions from ships
An update on progress towards the decarbonization of international maritime transport was reported to high-level officials from government Energy and Transport departments in the Pacific region. It took place at a workshop held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in the margins of the Fifth Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers' Meeting.
Maritime trade facilitation takes centre stage in Astana, Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is being supported by IMO to accede to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL),. Participants from relevant ministries and stakeholders with responsibilities for the clearance of ships, cargoes, crews, and passengers at Kazakhstan's ports of Aktau and Kuryk, are participating in the National Seminar on Facilitation of Maritime Traffic (16-18 May), held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
New e-learning course on safe operation of ships launched in Spanish
A new free-to-access e-learning course "Introduction to the ISM Code" has been launched exclusively in Spanish on the IMO e-learning platform. The course aims to provide Spanish-speaking personnel of Maritime Administrations, authorities, and individuals interested in maritime issues with the tools and knowledge to implement the International Safety Management Code (ISM) for the safe operation of ships.
First Arab Women in Maritime workshop on ships’ biofouling management
The contribution that women can make to tackling the issue of invasive aquatic species introduced by ships’ biofouling was discussed at the GloFouling Partnerships project's first regional event to be held with Arab Women in Maritime. As well as increasing awareness of biofouling and best practices in managing it to protect marine biodiversity and tackle climate change, the Workshop was a forum for women in the biofouling management sector to identify barriers and gaps related to gender equality, and to explore possible solutions.
Support for African countries on oil spill response incident command
The basics of how to manage an incident in the event of an oil spill were covered at an in-person regional workshop in Nairobi, Kenya (9-12 May). The aim of the event was to enable African countries to better understand and exercise the national Incident Command System for responding to oil pollution.
Expanding port security expertise in the Philippines
An Advanced Drills and Exercises Workshop took place in Manila, Philippines (9-12 May) to arm participants with the knowledge and skills required to plan, conduct, and assess security drills and exercises to ensure maritime security at port facilities, and to assess the effectiveness of the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code ISPS Code.
ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group celebrates women in maritime
The second International Day for Women in Maritime was celebrated early at the 44th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (MTWG 44) held in Da Nang. The meeting (9-11 May) discussed strategic plans to decarbonize shipping, enhance regional economic integration and improve the diversity and competencies of the workforce in maritime.

Africa's abundance of solar, wind and thermal energy across the continent can place Africa at the core of the global decarbonization of maritime transport, the IMO conference on Low-Carbon Shipping in Africa heard (5 May).
